Kaziranga:
Kaziranga, in the language of the Karbi tribe means ‘where the mountain goat has water’. This swampy wetland was the hunting ground for the tribes and shikaris was declared as a protected area in 1905. Later declared as wildlife sanctuary in 1950, its gained the status of a national park in 1974. Adding to its glory, Kaziranga was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
Flat grasslands with streams and large landlocked water bodies form the park. Large mammals like elephants, one-horned rhinos, tigers, hog deer walk here. Kaziranga is home to 70 percent of world’s swamp or wild buffalo population. The rare swamp deer are plenty here. Kaziranga also houses around 450 wetland, grassland and woodland birds.
Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary:
This park also known as the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, is a evergreen forest located in Assam, India. The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary contains India's only gibbons – the Hoolock Gibbons, and Northeastern India's only nocturnal primate – the Bengal Slow Loris.
The upper canopy of the forest is dominated by the Hollong tree, while the Nahar dominates the middle canopy. The lower canopy consists of evergreen shrubs and herbs.
The sanctuary has a very rich biodiversity and is home to the only apes in India, the Western Hoolack Gibbon. Other primates include the Stump-tailed Macaque, Northern Pig-tailed Macaque, Eastern Assemesse Macaque, Rhesus Macaque and Capped Langur. Also found at the sanctuary are Indian elephants,tigers, leopards, four types of squirrel and several other types of mammal. At least 219 species of bird and several types of snake are known to live in the park.
